Hispanic Business Students Association

Established in 1974, HBSA has played a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of Latinos and Hispanics on campus. We have launched key initiatives at ASU, including co-founding the ASU Hispanic Convocation and El Concilio, ASU’s Latin coalition. This organization is deeply committed to the personal and professional development of its members, community building, community service, and cultural awareness.

Freshman Year

Executive Assistant

As a Freshman, I quickly got involved in HBSA through committee work. Eager to take on the next step, I decided to run for the Executive Board. I was fortunate to have won my election and serve as Executive Assistant. In this role, I designed and distributed our weekly newsletter to 1,000 + subscribers on Mailchimp. Additionally, I oversaw all merchandise orders and assisted our President/Vice President team with administrative work. At the end of an eventful Freshman year, I attended our Annual Awards Banquet, where I received HBSA’s “Member of the Year” award, recognizing my involvement during the 2021-2022 academic year!

Activities Director

As Activities Director, I hosted our bi-annual Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) and served as fundraising chair for HBSA.

DLS, sponsored by the Salt River Project, is a formal luncheon in which a prestigious Latino is invited to share their success story with students, parents, alumni, and sponsors.

As Activities Director, I secured our first-ever music industry speaker, Delia Orjuela (Manager at Warner Chappell Music and President of the Latin Songwriter Hall of Fame) and coordinated event details such as venue booking, catering, digital/print materials, speaker accommodations, run of show, and guest management under a strict budget.

On the fundraising side, I hosted three fundraisers:

  • Pie-in-the-face Fundraiser: pay to pie an E-Board member.

  • HBSA Bingo Board: E-Board members post a bingo board to their Instagram story and cross off tiles based on how many donations they receive.

  • Winter Kermes: HBSA members cook traditional Hispanic food and sell it at a local neighborhood.

49th Banquet Co-chair

HBSA’s Annual Banquet is an awards ceremony where students, sponsors, family members, and alumni gather to recognize student achievement, graduating seniors, and member participation for the year.

As a co-chair, I worked alongside my fellow chairs and under the guidance of HBSA’s advisor, Dr. Loui Olivas. My involvement played a critical role as I raised $30,000 in sponsorships, led a committee of 15 members, and coordinated the venue, catering, decorations, and entertainment. Additionally, I managed all administrative work, including seating arrangements, invitations, scripts, run of show, and presented the Spanish translation of the program.

Working behind the scenes with advisors, alumni, college deans, and sponsors, gave me a deeper understanding of HBSA’s history and the impact that we continue to have at ASU. This experience led me to find my calling within the organization and inspired me to continue growing and giving back!

Junior Year

Junior Year

Vice president of marketing

When I was a Freshman, I was drawn to HBSA for two reasons: the professional experience and the Instagram — I am living proof that aesthetics matter! I always knew that I wanted to be V.P. of Marketing, and I made this a reality during my Junior year! In this role, I:

  • Oversaw all HBSA social accounts, including Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and TikTok

  • Designed, edited, and published graphics, videos, and social copy — utilizing Canva, Lightroom, and CapCut.

  • Created HBSA’s “Mini Mic Series.”

  • Created the Alumni Takeover Series on Instagram Stories to create visibility of our alumni and their post-grad journeys.

  • Photographed and kept a file of all HBSA events.

Although I gained technical skills, such as content planning, my biggest takeaway from this role is that social media is about community and connection. No matter what the post was, the most engagement and impact came from posts that were personable and told a story — something members could connect and interact with.

Vice president of operations

As Vice President of Operations, my primary responsibility was hosting our general meetings and professional development events.

In this role, I hosted seven professional meetings featuring companies like Deloitte, Warner Music U, and Arizona State Representative Marcelino Quiñonez. I also developed organizational documents, including task lists, PowerPoint presentations, event reports, and sponsorship packages.

By far, my greatest accomplishment in this role was organizing HBSA’s first-ever professional retreat to Los Angeles, where 26 students got the opportunity to tour and network with employees at SoFi Stadium and the National Football League.

50th banquet chair

During my Junior year, I had the privilege of chairing HBSA’s 50th Anniversary Banquet, an event that brought together 400 attendees to recognize our 50-year legacy.

As a chair, I mentored our team, leveraging my previous experience to provide guidance and areas of improvement. I also coordinated event details, including venue, catering, guest gifts, and activations. Additionally, I designed a newspaper feature for Prensa AZ Republic and assisted our advisor in raising $100,000 in sponsorships.

Leading up to the celebration, my E-Board was invited to an alumni dinner, where I was deeply honored to speak about HBSA’s current achievements and our vision for the next 50 years. Four years ago, I couldn’t have imagined the profound role HBSA would play in my personal and professional journey. That dinner filled me with immense gratitude and pride, and it is a moment I will never forget.

Senior Year

President

After four years with HBSA, serving as President was a full-circle moment that allowed me to take a step back and help others bring their visions to life. As President, I:

  • Mentored 13 E-Board members, fostering leadership development, strategic execution, and innovation.

  • Served as liaison between advisors and business school, maintaining aligned goals and strong relations.

  • Represented the organization in all university and external affairs, strengthening visibility and reputation.

  • Facilitated bi-weekly E-Board meetings, including agenda creation and performance tracking.

  • Managed administrative tasks (grant submissions & digital records) to ensure organizational longevity.

To wrap up the end of my term and college career, I was thrilled to accept the W.P. Carey School of Business Organization of the Year award on behalf of HBSA!
